The Thriving Recluse | Rafael de Cardenas

A peek into the creative ways people are spending their time at home.

New York architect Rafael de Cárdenas is focusing on flower arranging.

“Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, is my point of inspiration. But I’m just kind of doing my own thing.”

"I don’t know how to make an arrangement with more than one type of flower, so I group different vases together. Except for a tulipiere that my boyfriend gave me for Christmas, I only use clear vessels from Crate & Barrel.”

“I get my flowers from a Brooklyn shop called Stem. Right now, I’m into Banksia, Ranunculus, and Allium. I like to add fruits and vegetables to the arrangement.”

“It takes me hours to do one. But I love it. Containment has turned me into a full white lady. I’m basically Gwyneth Paltrow now, soaking beans and making flower arrangements.”
