This Is Água Viva
Exploring the sun, skin & sea with Costa Brazil and Claudia Lebenthal.
This summer, Costa Brazil introduces Água Viva - a new editorial series celebrating those who live in rhythm with the water. Curated and written by author and creative director Claudia Lebenthal, Água Viva profiles a collection of water women, water men, and the photographers who capture them — exploring their deep connection to the ocean, surfing and the sports of the sea, and the rituals that keep them grounded, both in and out of the water.
We begin with Austin Kino and Tamiko Claire, a lifelong waterman and waterwoman from Oahu, Hawaii. Though they only truly connected later in life, they’ve long shared a bond through their relationship with the ocean. This is what it means to be a waterman or waterwoman. It is what ties them together: salt, sea, and shared reverence for the waves.

Austin Kino and Tamiko Claire, age 37 and 36, met through modeling, a profession for both, but through their shared passion for the ocean pursuits of surfing and paddling knew of each other from afar. Hawaii is a small knit community. It is the birthplace of surfing. Everyone knows who’s out in the water on any given day. It is what connects them. It is what bonds them together.

Stay tuned as we bring you closer to the water, one story at a time.
